Faculty of Law graduate Mark J. Sandler (LLB 1978) has been selected to receive the 2025 Toronto Lawyers Association (TLA) Award of Distinction.

One of Canada’s most respected and prominent criminal lawyers, Sandler has practised criminal appellate and trial litigation for more than four decades.

The TLA Award of Distinction is awarded in recognition of the recipient's lifetime contributions, excellence and outstanding achievements, as well as his or her dedication to the Toronto community, legal and at large.

The Tort Law and Social Equality Project (TLSE) at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law has been granted leave to intervene in the upcoming Supreme Court of Canada appeal in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia.

This significant appeal will consider whether the tort of family violence should be recognized as a necessary and narrow extension of the common law, addressing constitutional values of equality and the needs of those harmed by family violence.

In the 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, U of T Law ranked first in Canada and in the top 25, globally.

U of T Law is one of only two Canadian schools to rank in the global top 50.

U of T also ranked in the top 100 globally in 42 subjects in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024, released last week – a feat matched only by the University of Michigan.
