Daniel Michaels, a 3L JD student, is the recipient of the 2011 CBA James H. Bocking Memorial Award for his paper, “An Analysis of Visa and Mastercard Merchant Restraints: Illegal Price Maintenance or a Necessary Tool for the Efficient Working of the Credit Card Network Services Market.” The award is presented annually for the best scholarly paper submitted to the CBA’s National Competition Law Section on a subject directly related to Canadian competition law or policy.

“The jury said that this paper presents a balanced, well-written account of the difficult issues involved in the credit card industry,” says Donald B. Houston, Chair of the National Competition Law Section and Partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Toronto. “Given that the credit card industry is attracting the attention of competition agencies around the world, the jury noted that the paper’s presentation of differing views within the field is both timely and helpful.”

The award will be presented at the annual CBA Competition Law Conference on Thursday, October 6, at the Hilton Lac Leamy Hotel in Gatineau, Quebec. The award includes a $1,000 prize and complimentary registration for the conference.
