Carl Elliott and the book cover of The Occasional Human Sacrifice Medical Experimentation and the Price of Saying No with photos of the four panelists listed in the body of the email

A thought-provoking panel discussion exploring the complex ethical terrain of medical experimentation, inspired by the groundbreaking insights from University of Minnesota Professor Carl Elliott's recent work, The Occasional Human Sacrifice: Medical Experimentation and the Price of Saying No. It begins with the public health worker who exposed the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and ending with the four physicians who in 2016 blew the whistle on lethal synthetic trachea transplants at the Karolinska Institute, this work tells the extraordinary stories of insiders who spoke out against such abuses, and often paid a terrible price for doing the right thing.

Join us for this special presentation by Elliott, followed by a distinguished panel discussion and debate on whistleblowing with renowned experts in the field:

  • Trudo Lemmens, Scholl Chair in Health Law and Policy, University of Toronto Faculty of Law

  • Nancy Olivieri, Professor, Pediatrics, Medicine and Public Health Sciences, University of Toronto

  • Doris Rajan, Director of Social Development and Kelly Johnson, Indigenous front-line worker, Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society

  • James Turk, Director, Centre of Free Expression, Toronto Metropolitan University

Reception to follow the main program includes refreshments and appetizers.
