Be part of this celebration recognizing legendary 2SLGBTQI+ champion R. Douglas Elliott (JD 1982) as recipient of the Carl Mitchell 2) Community Impact Award, presented by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA). During a fireside chat with UTAA Past President Sana Halwani (JD 2004), Elliott will discuss his decades of advocacy and community work, including landmark constitutional cases that made national headlines and changed the lives of thousands of Canadians.

R. Douglas Elliott is a partner in Cambridge LLP. He established his own practice after articling in 1984 and began representing members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, especially those affected by the AIDS epidemic. His victories as lead counsel include judgements recognizing same-sex common-law relationships, securing Canada Pension Plan survivor’s pensions for gay and lesbian Canadians, and a class-action lawsuit for thousands fired from federal government jobs in the 1950s and 60s. Among his volunteer leadership roles, he has been a longtime supporter of Egale Canada, the Canadian AIDS Society, and the LGBT Purge Fund.
