The David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights, with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Labour Congress, held a panel discussion, "G20: Lessons Learned, Messages Lost," on June 23, 2011. The panel was moderated by award-winning Toronto Star journalist Bob Hepburn, and included panelists Clayton Ruby, John Sewell, Meaghan Daniel, and Hassan Yussuff.

On March 28, 2011, the Centre for the Legal Profession (CLP) held its second session in the Program on Professionalism.  Our featured speaker, Ms. Sandra Forbes, Partner, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, addressed the question “Can zealous advocacy and professionalism co-exist?”.  This lively and engaging discussion provided an excellent opportunity to promote ethical and professional issues and to bring a dynamic member of the bar together with our students and alumni.

On Friday April 1, 2011, the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights hosted a half-day symposium on "Funding the Charter Challenge."

During the symposium, legal experts in practice and the academy provided information and commentary on the availability of funding for some of the most significant litigation in the country. How can you obtain advanced costs? Are class actions feasible in Charter claims? What are the reasonable and ethical limits of pro bono? Does the legal aid system adequately fund complex cases?

On March 9, 2011, the Centre for the Legal Profession (CLP) launched a new initiative, the Program on Professionalism. This program will invite leading members of the profession – drawn from the judiciary, diverse areas of practice and the academy – to come to the Centre and the Faculty of Law, to examine current ethical and professional issues.

Our inaugural speaker was the Honourable Mr. Justice Stephen Goudge, who spoke on the topic of “What does it mean to be a legal professional?”

Judith McCormack, Executive Director of Downtown Legal Services and Acting Assistant Dean, Students, appeared on TVO's The Agenda on March 2, 2011, to take part in a discussion on the access to justice issues raised by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada Beverley McLachlin at the Access to Civil Justice for Middle Income Canadians Colloquium, hosted by the Faculty of Law Feb. 10-11, 2011.
