The issue of public subsidies for political parties resurfaced Friday, with Stephen Harper promising to eliminate funding if he achieves a parliamentary majority. Those with a three-year memory span will recall that the Tories were nearly defeated by the combined opposition when they proposed this move in 2008.

Launch of the new Canadian Securities Law Portal

(Jan. 26, 2011) Faculty of the University of Toronto law school, led by Prof. Anita Anand, have launched the Canadian Securities Law Portal.

The portal is dedicated to facilitating discussion and debate regarding the proposed national securities regulator, including gathering together in one place all of the relevant material for the federal reference to the Supreme Court of Canada, and provincial references to the courts of appeal of Alberta and Quebec. These constitutional references are extremely important to the future of capital markets in Canada.

On Jan. 30, 2011, Tim Hughes and Andrew Vey placed first after three rounds of vigorous competition, including an exciting final round before the chairs of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Canada Industrial Relations Board, and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

Welcome Day 2011 shows a day-in-the-life of law school

The Faculty offered a glimpse into law school life, including its academic and co-curricular offerings, student services, faculty and staff, to more than 100 newly admitted applicants for this September’s J.D. class at its annual Welcome Day Feb. 18, 2011.

Dean Mayo Moran started off the afternoon with a formal welcome, describing the Faculty as an intellectually lively place, and calling prospective students the “Faculty’s future.”

Reproductive health law program contributes brief to EU court's Irish abortion rights case

The Faculty of Law's International Reproductive and Sexual Health Law Programme has co-written a friend-of-the-court brief with the Center for Reproductive Rights in the case ABC v. Ireland before the European Court of Human Rights. A decision was given in the case on Dec. 16, 2010.
