The Centre for the Legal Profession hosted “Access to Justice for All” on Feb. 10, 2012, to promote discussion about “one of the most defining issues in the legal profession in Ontario.” The roundtable occurred on the one-year anniversary of the law school’s highly successful Access to Justice Colloquium.

Prof. Ran Hirschl has been awarded a prestigious Killam Research Fellowship

University of Toronto professor Ran Hirschl of the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Law has been named the recipient of one of the seven 2012 Killam Research Fellowships. 

The prestigious fellowships, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts, allow researchers to pursue independent research for two years using a stipend of $70,000 annually. Recipients were chosen by the Killam selection committee, comprising 15 scientists and scholars from a broad range of disciplines.

Prof. Ayelet Shachar was quoted in a Reuters article on buying citizenship ("Passports... for a price," Feb. 13, 2012). Prof. Shachar notes:

"The idea that someone can gain fast-tracked citizenship in a country they have no ties to based on a wire transfer of funds or cash is a far cry from the vision of equal and participatory membership in a political community that is still reflected in many citizenship and naturalization laws," says Ayelet Shachar, a professor of law, political science and global affairs at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law.
