SJD student Mariam Olafuyi has been awarded an emerging academic award at the third annual African Scholars Awards ceremony. 

The awards, created by the University of Toronto’s African Alumni Association, recognize the winners for their commitment to building and strengthening communities inside and outside U of T in ways that promote diversity, inclusivity and innovation. Twenty-five students, faculty, staff and alumni received awards at an event at the William Waters Lounge in Woodsworth College.

In a commentary in The Conversation, Prof. Trudo Lemmens and co-author Laverne Jacobs  (University of Windsor , Faculty of Law) argue that what’s known as the Truchon decision, which invalidated Canada’s “reasonable foreseeable death” and “end of life” access criteria for medical assistance in dying, should be appealed ("The latest medical assistance in dying decision needs to be appealed: Here’s why," October 9, 2019).

A feature article in U of T Magazine profiles Prof. Audrey Macklin's research on Canada's groundbreaking private refugee sponsorship program ("The Power of Good Intentions: Canada’s program of private refugee sponsorship has been held up as a model for the world. Could it be even better?", October 2, 2019).

When she was named a 2017 Trudeau Fellow, Macklin’s research question was: How does the process of helping refugees become citizens transform the citizenship of sponsors?

Innovative new IHRP clinical course is part of a global partnership to protect media freedom

The University of Toronto Faculty of Law is joining a global campaign for media freedom and will play a leading role in developing legal tools to protect journalists and defend freedom of the press alongside project partners, including a panel of legal experts led by Lord Neuberger, former President of the Supreme Court of the UK, and Amal Clooney, special envoy on media freedom to the UK Foreign Secretary.
