“Constitutional rights seem like an obscure subject for most Canadians, until their own rights are adversely affected,” said alumnus David Asper, LLM 2007. Five years later, a clear picture emerged on Nov. 8, 2013 of the influence of the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights on the definition of rights in Canada.

Prof. Flood awarded honorary membership by the College of Family Physicians

Professor Colleen Flood, LLM 1994 and SJD 1998, has been awarded an honorary membership by the College of Family Physicians. Honorary membership may be awarded to individuals who are not family physicians in Canada, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the CFPC, the discipline of family medicine, the medical profession, or the health and well-being of the population in Canada and globally.

JD student Josh Mandryk has co-authored, with labour lawyer Andrew Langille, a commentary in the Toronto Star arguing that Ontario needs to address the problem of unpaid internships ("Ontario must take urgent action on unpaid internships," November 4, 2013).

University of Toronto law students are also involved in a related initiative, the website www.payyourinterns.ca.

In memoriam: Madam Justice Joan Lax

The Faculty of Law is very saddened to hear that Madam Justice Joan Lax of the Ontario Superior Court passed away suddenly on Nov. 4, 2013.

Justice Lax was a great friend of the law school. She was a former assistant dean and director of admissions, and was the wife of Class of 1968 alumnus Clifford Lax (of Lax O’Sullivan LLP).
