Tear gas should be banned under international human rights law

The use of tear gas is rightfully banned in warfare, and should equally be banned as a riot control agent in law enforcement contexts

(Toronto, September 3, 2020) — The use of tear gas - particularly CS gas - as a riot control agent, cannot be reconciled with respect for fundamental human rights and should therefore be banned entirely in international law, the University of Toronto’s International Human Rights Program (IHRP) said in a report released today.

U of T Law welcomes another exceptional cohort of 212 JD students from an applicant pool of over 2,000. Over half the class are women and nearly half identify as a person of colour.

Masks. More frequent cleaning. New plexiglass barriers, physical distancing measures and additional hand sanitizers. These are just some of the measures the University of Toronto is taking to keep the community safe and healthy this fall.

“We’ve taken a very good look at our campus right from when you get on site to when you come to the front door of a building all the way to when you get to the classroom,” says Ron Saporta, U of T’s chief operating officer, property services and sustainability.
