More than 40 JD/MBA alumni and students turned out on a warm late summer night at Dan Debow’s house in the Hillcrest neighbourhood of Toronto, to talk about life during and after the UofT program.

Debow, JD/MBA ’00, says he remembers enjoying these mixers when he was a student, and he and his former classmates wanted to resurrect it this year. So he decided to host a BBQ.

“It’s a chance to meet some alumni, and your classmates, in a relaxed environment, and to catch up with those you haven’t seen in awhile. And it’s to have a good time.”

Third-year student Amanda Melvin agrees. “It’s always nice to meet the new people in the program.”

That’s exactly what Ginger Ellison was doing. “I’m new recruit from Osgoode law school, and everyone encouraged me to come out and meet new people.”

But these mixers are about more than networking for a future job, says student Matthew Literovich. “The legal community is very tight-knit,” he says. “This is not just issue of meeting people you’re going to work with on deals, but meeting who’s going to be on the other side of deals, to get to know them and remain cordial during that process.”
