New Black Future Lawyers Program at the Faculty of Law

Dear law school community,

I am very pleased to let you know about an important new outreach program at the Faculty of Law.

The Black Future Lawyers program (BFL) is a collaboration between the Faculty of Law, our Black Law Students Association, our Black alumni, and other members of the legal profession. BFL’s goals are to increase the number of Black students who attend the Faculty of Law and join the legal profession.

Anita Anand, professor at the Faculty of Law, named to federal cabinet

First-time Liberal Member of Parliament and University of Toronto Faculty of Law Professor Anita Anand has been named the federal minister of public services and procurement.

Anand, who is currently on leave from U of T after being elected to represent the riding of Oakville, Ont. in the most recent federal election, was sworn in at Rideau Hall on November 20 as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reshuffled cabinet portfolios.

Students call on the Ontario and federal governments to act on air pollution

Today, November 18th, is the Student Law Clinic Global Day of Action for Climate Justice. We are a student working group at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and, on this day, we call on our provincial and federal governments to take meaningful action to curb emissions in Ontario. The harmful consequences of air pollution are widespread and government inaction only exacerbates them.

Asper Centre and Justice for Children and Youth organize youth consultations for legal challenge to Canada’s voting age

In partnership with several child rights organizations, Justice for Children and Youth (JFCY) and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights (Asper Centre) have secured case development funding from the Court Challenges Program, which helps finance cases of national significance related to constitutional human rights issues. They will be hosting a consultation for children and youth to inform a legal challenge against Canada’s minimum voting age.

U of T Law ranked in top 10 global law schools in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020

The University of Toronto Faculty of Law has been ranked as one of the top 10 law schools in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.

U of T Law was ranked tenth, ahead of any other law schools outside of Great Britain and the United States.

Alumni at Reunion

It was another fantastic turnout as over 500 alumni from years ending in 4 and 9 gathered at the law school on October 25 for the Faculty of Law reunion. The the Osler Atrium, Bora Laskin Law Library and Torys Hall were filled with a wonderful vibe as alumni reconnected with classmates at the pre-dinner cocktail reception. The largest turnout was from the newest alumni, as 70 members of the class of 2014 joined the party for their first reunion.

Philip PettitThe annual Cecil A. Wright Memorial Lecture marked its 50th anniversary with a talk on October 10, 2019 by Philip Pettit, L.S. Rockefeller University Professor of Politics and Human Values at Princeton University. The inaugural lecture had been given in 1969 by Prof J. Fleming (Univ of California).
