The Honourable Justice

Justice Andrew Pinto was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto in February 2020. He has sat on the civil, family, and criminal law teams since his appointment.

Prior to his judicial appointment, he practiced law for 25 years in the areas of civil litigation, employment and labour, administrative and human rights law. He appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada and practiced regularly before all levels of court as well as numerous administrative tribunals. Just prior to his appointment, he served as Chair of the Law Commission of Ontario.

A graduate of the University of Windsor law school in 1993, he was the recipient of the Best Oralist Award, Zuber Moot competition, and the John W. Whiteside Award. He was the editor in chief of the Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues. In November 2018, he received a Distinguished Alumni award from his law school.

In August 2011, he was appointed by the Attorney General of Ontario to conduct an independent review of the changes made to the Ontario human rights system since 2008. He held public consultations across the province and submitted his Final Report in November 2012.

He taught administrative law at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto and guest lectured at several law schools. He is a past chair of the Administrative Law section of the Ontario Bar Association, and past chair of the Equity Advisory Group of the Law Society of Ontario. He was also a co-Chair of the University of Toronto Tribunal that deals with academic discipline.

In November 2008, he received an inaugural “Lawyer of the Year” award from the South Asian Bar Association Toronto. Prior to his legal career, he received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University and worked in the high-tech sector.
