Instructor(s): Douglas Sanderson

Note: 3 credits (Conditional enrol)

Note: Credits are allocated as follows: one credit in the fall term and two credits to the winter term.

Senior Board Members will be selected by the Director in the Spring of each year. Students must be in residence for the year in order to obtain credit for the journal. For purposes of this requirement, students registered in an Osgoode intensive are considered to be in residence if their intensive placement is in Toronto.

Students who serve as Senior Board Members of the Indigenous Law Journal and who register to receive credit will receive three ungraded academic credits. No credit will be shown on the interim statement of grades until the program has been fully completed. It is strongly recommended that Senior Board Members take the course Aboriginal Peoples and Canadian Law (LAW370).

Eligible students must commit themselves to their Indigenous Law Journal review responsibilities for the entire academic year to obtain credit. No grade will be assigned until the end of the academic year and the publication of the relevant ILJ issue.

Senior Editors will work on two submissions, and submit a folio of the following:

  1. Two Manuscript and Research Assessments: 2-3 pages in length and submitted prior to the Senior Board meeting each term.

           a)  Manuscript Assessment: Each Senior Editor will prepare an outline of the submission, an abstract, and write a memo analyzing its strengths and weaknesses.

           b)  Research Assessment: Each Senior Editor will write a memo on the adequacy of part of the research in the submission.

  1. Feedback letter: Based on the Senior Board’s assessment of the submission Senior Editors will draft a letter to their authors conveying feedback.

  1. Editing: Each Senior Editor will annotate the submission to suggest revisions.

Students may work in teams.

In sum, each Senior Editor taking the ILJ for three ungraded credits will provide each semester will focus on two submissions and provide for each: an overall manuscript assessment, a research assessment, feedback to the authors, and marked up copy of the paper showing editing suggestions that improve the submission, ideally to publishable standards.
