On June 30, 2023, her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, announced 85 new appointments to the Order of Canada.
The Faculty of Law congratulates three alumni on their appointments. Named an Officer of the Order of Canada:
The Honourable Robert James Sharpe, O.C. (LLB 1970)
Sharpe was named an Officer "for his distinguished contributions to the advancement of law in Canada as both a judge and academic."
Justice Sharpe is a graduate of the Class of 1970. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1990 to 1995, and is currently a Distinguished Jurist-in-Residence at U of T Law. He is also a past recipient of the Faculty's Distinguished Alumni Award.
Named a Member of the Order of Canada:
Joan H. Garson, C.M. (LLB 1978)
Garson was recognized "for her leadership and governance of numerous non-profit organizations within Jewish communities across Canada and around the world."
Garson is a graduate of the Class of 1978, and is a past recipient of the Myra York Women of Action Community Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF).
Stephen Stohn, C.M. (JD 1977)
Stohn was recognized "for his long-time contributions to the Canadian entertainment industry, notably as a television producer, lawyer, mentor and advocate for artists."
Stohn is a graduate of the Class of 1977 and chancellor at Trent University. His production credits include several Juno Awards specials, the TV series Instant Star, as well as Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class.
The announcement from the Governor General of Canada stated that "Since its creation in 1967, the Order of Canada has honoured more than 7,800 people whose service has shaped our society, whose innovations have ignited our imaginations, and whose compassion has united our communities."
