NEW JD STUDENTS
Fall 2024 Tuition Payment Summary

Updated July 15, 2024

This webpage applies to NEW first year, transfer (into second year), visiting students on a Letter of Permission (LOP) in our JD program.

This is a SUMMARY only. Please ensure that you read fully how to plan properly, what the fees are, how much to pay, how to pay (or defer), and the fee payment deadlines.

Go online to the law school Fees & Financial Aid website

 1. VIEW YOUR FEES INVOICE ON ACORN

Starting July 15th, the fees invoice is expected to be accessed in ACORN. It will show:

  • the total amount received from your non-refundable tuition deposit(s) for accepting your offer of admission
  • the remaining amount of fees required for each term
  • the Minimum Payment required to be registered

Your Student Fees Account Number

  • Log in to your ACORN account today to view your invoice.
  • Your student fees account number to be used when paying fees by e-banking. It is displayed in the upper right hand corner of the invoice as your ROSI Account number.
  • If you have not yet accessed your ACORN account, see the Next Steps online.

2. MINIMUM TUITION PAYMENT TO BE A REGISTERED STUDENT

By August 1st, a Minimum Tuition Payment in order to be officially registered must have been RECEIVED at the university. Until then, you are only invited to register (i.e. admitted but not yet registered, with a registration status of INVITED).

  • VITAL: When you first view the invoice, make a record immediately of the Minimum Tuition Payment amount due, since that amount will no longer display after a payment (of any value) is made or a fee deferral request is granted.

  • The Minimum Tuition Payment displayed already credits any tuition deposit(s) made for accepting the offer of admission, i.e. acceptance deposit(s).  Therefore, when paying that Minimum, do not subtract the tuition acceptance deposit value as it is already factored in, instead pay the displayed Minimum.

  • It can take 3-5 business days for a fee payment to be processed by the university, therefore time your payment to meet receipt of payment deadlines.

USING THE SCOTIABANK or TD LINE OF CREDIT FOR THE MINIMUM TUITION PAYMENT

  • Regardless of your participation in the UofT JD Financial Aid Program, you may be eligible to obtain a Line of Credit loan from our preferred lenders Scotiabank and TD Bank. The benefits to our students are the greater borrowing amount (than is customary) and the lower interest rate (than is customary). See description online.

  • You might not have access to these Scotiabank or TD funds until after you are officially registered, i.e. in August.

  • However, to use your line of credit toward some or all of the Minimum Tuition Payment, you will have to provide Scotiabank or TD with a copy of your fees invoice from ACORN and ask the bank to deposit the required amount directly to your UofT student fees account. This can be done as soon as you have access to your invoice in ACORN.

3. FEE DEFERRALS

By the same August 1st deadline, the Minimum Tuition Payment to Register may instead be deferred (delayed) for students who will receive government student loans.

If you are relying on government student loans, and/or our JD Financial Aid Program to partially fund your education, then please pay close attention to the following:

  • Apply for a government student loan immediately
If you haven't yet done so, apply for government student loans right away in order to be able to defer the Minimum Tuition Payment, by the payment deadline. Otherwise, you are responsible for making the payment by the deadline.
This is normally the busiest time of the year for government student loan agencies, and the processing of your government student loan application may take longer than usual. So please apply without delay!

  • After applying for a government student loan
The law school does not handle these loans. Instead, ALL processing of government loans for UofT students is handled exclusively by this central university office:

  • OBTAINING A FEE DEFERRAL
See the law school Fees & Financial Aid website

  • STUDENTS GRANTED A FEE DEFERRAL: HOW MUCH TO PAY
Your Fall term fees (tuition, ancillary and for international students: UHIP) are due to be RECEIVED by September 30. Based on the fees invoice value, please determine how you'll make the payment to Student Accounts toward your ACORN account, from among the funding sources at your disposal, viz.

      • Funds deposited into (credited to) your ACORN account to pay fees:
        • If applicable, OSAP First Payment - deposited directly by the government
        • If applicable, a Bursary from UofT Law JD Financial Aid program - deposited directly by UofT Law
        • Line of Credit loans - deposited directly by Scotia/TD upon request by the student
        • Personal funds (savings, RESPS, RRSPs etc.) - deposited directly by the student via allowable payment methods (e.g. e-banking, money order, bank draft, credit card

      • Therefore, please calculate:
        1. How much will be deposited (credited) on your behalf, and

        2. How much you must pay yourself
For this amount, ensure that your payment is RECEIVED by September 30.

You should know the government student loans and UofT Law Bursary amounts by Sept 25 (assuming that you've met those aid application and supporting document submission deadlines).

As soon as you know those amounts perform the calculation.
Do not wait for the OSAP or bursary amount to be displayed in ACORN before making your payment.

4. NON-ACADEMIC INCIDENTAL FEES

Some of your non-academic incidental fees may be opted out via ACORN. It is important that you are aware of the services covered by the fees before making any opt-out decision. Please make sure you read the University's overview of the Incidental Fees (FAQs, background, policies, reports).

The Student Law Society (SLS), your law school student government, will contact you regarding its incidental fee. Please read the information to learn how the SLS incidental fee supports all JD students.

5. PROOF OF ENROLMENT

Only after your Minimum Payment to Register is processed at the university (or a fee deferral request has been granted), will you attain the status of being a Registered student, i.e. enrolled.

Therefore, depending on WHEN you seek it, the university enables you to self-generate a Proof of Enrolment Letter in ACORN that will state that you are either EXPECTED to register, or are officially REGISTERED.

If you will require the Letter to secure Line of Credit (LOC) funding then visit the JD Financial Aid website to read the section on Enrollment Confirmation
