In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, compiled by London-based analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), evaluators assessed universities’ performance across five broad subject areas and 55 individual subjects.

In the Law and Legal Studies subject field, U of T Law is first in Canada (#16), top 10 in North America and among the top 20 law schools, globally. This year's QS subject rankings added 171 institutions not included in 2024.

The University of British Columbia's Peter A. Allard School of Law ranked 38 and McGill University's Faculty of Law ranked 41 as the only other Canadian law schools in the top 100, with Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law ranked next in the 101-150 range. More than 400 universities comprise the Law & Legal Studies ranking.

There are five indicators that determine the QS World University Rankings by Subject: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, H-index (measuring both the productivity and impact of an academic unit) and the IRN (International research network), an index that reflects the ability of institutions to diversify the geography of their international research network by establishing sustainable research partnerships with other higher education institutions.
