As the country mourned the loss of the Honourable Charles L. Dubin, QC on October 27, family, friends and colleagues honoured his memory by making contributions to establish a student scholarship at the Faculty of Law.
"The outpouring of support has been tremendous and far-reaching - even from former classmates from his undergraduate years at University College at U of T," says Dean Mayo Moran. "It speaks to the fact that he was not only one of Canada's great legal minds, but also a wonderful human being who had a talent for engaging people. A passionate advocate of the justice system, he brought a unique voice to his private cases, and his vast reservoir of legal knowledge and leadership in some of Canada's most interesting and important public inquiries will continue to be an inspiring legacy. He will be missed," she adds.
Best known for his inquiry into drug use in amateur sport, Justice Dubin was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal. From 1990 to 1996, he served as Chief Justice and then rejoined Torys upon his retirement from the Court of Appeal, working in arbitration as well as litigation and dispute resolution. He is a 1941 U of T graduate, a 1944 graduate of the Osgoode Hall Law School, and in 1993 received an honorary doctorate of laws from U of T.
Details on the scholarship to be named in Justice Dubin's honour are still to be determined, but discussions with family members have included support of a JD student focusing on criminal law - Justice Dubin's particular area of expertise.
