Andrew Pyper, class of 1995

It is with immense sadness that the Faculty of Law announces the passing of alumnus Andrew Pyper (LLB 1995) on Jan. 3. He was 56 years old.

Pyper, a prize-winning author of literary thrillers, wrote 14 novels. He published his first collection of short stories, Kiss Me, in the same year he was called to the bar. He chose to pursue his writing rather than practise law. He wrote about his decision – "Hungry for Failure" – for U of T Magazine in 2017. His last two works, under the pseudonym Mason Coile, will be published posthumously.

In 2021, Pyper took part in a panel discussion featuring law alumni authors as part of the Faculty's webinar series.

Pyper is survived by his wife of 20 years, Heidi, and his two children, Maude and Ford.
