Please retain your Offer of Admission letter, and bring it with you when you arrive at the university.  
 
Although they are numbered, some of the steps should be started simultaneously, so read all steps before you proceed with the first step.
 

 

 

1. Accept your Offer of Admission by specified deadline

WHEN
Accept the Offer by the deadline in your Offer of Admission email/letter.
HOW
Follow the instructions in the Offer.
Inform both the host and your home schools that you accepted the exchange offer.
 
 

2. Enable your JOINid and log in to ACORN

WHENJOINid
Without delay, to gain e-access to key student services, including student housing listings.
HOW
New students to UofT
The JOINid and Student Number are listed on your Offer of Admission.

Caution!
If you try to log into applicant services that do not pertain to law students or visiting students, you will receive login error messages. Therefore, after you have enabled your JOINid, check that you can access to these specific portals:
- ACORN, and
- The Off-Campus Housing rental listings

  
WHEN
ACORN 
This is the Student Web Services (SWS) portal for the student record system that allows you to update your contact information, view your grades, see the details of program fees and payments etc.
 
Within 3 to 5 business days after submitting your acceptance of the Offer of Admission login to ACORN:
  1. To verify your current mailing and contact information. 
    You may update this information yourself at any time in ACORN, most particularly, to change your mailing address to your address in Toronto while on exchange.

  2. To add to your personal information one or more Emergency Contacts
    You MUST specify at least one person who the university should contact on your behalf, in the event of an emergency.
HOW

Go to www.acorn.utoronto.ca
Your UTORid must be enabled in order to use ACORN.

  1. To verify your mailing and contact information
    From the Profile & Settings menu, select the relevant options

  2. To add to your personal information an Emergency Contact
    From the Profile & Settings menu, select Emergency Contact
 

3. Get your UTORid, UTmail+ and TCard

WHEN
UTmail+ is your official UofT student email. Once classes begin, the law school email communication will  use this address only.
 
A UTMail+ address is required to access to a private Facebook group page with off-campus housing listings administered and moderated by UofT undergraduate students.
  • Your exchange period begins in September
    The process can take at least one week, so act well in advance of the June 14th deadline to complete the process obtain your UTMail+

  • Your exchange period begins in January 
    Starting on December 1, obtain your UTMail+ without delay, since the university is open for the first half of December before the end of term break.
HOW
UTMail+ is the only email used by the university to communicate officially with students. 
  • FIRST - Convert your JOINid to your UTORid 
  • SECOND - Everyone, provide JD Admissions with your UTMail+ address
    • Please let us know that you've set up your UTMail+ account, by emailing JD Admissions from your UTMail+ account.
 
WHEN
TCards may be obtained after you obtain your UTMail+.
 
Pick up your card, in-person, on-campus, before the first day of classes.  The sooner after your arrival to the city, the better.
HOW 
TCard is your official UofT identification (student card) for access to athletic & student services, to sit exams and obtain transit & retail discounts. Note that transit discounts are effective from the start of the Fall session in September. 
 
  

4. Housing Considerations

WHENAs soon as possible, due to the variety of options and availability of units which may suit your preferences.
HOW
OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING BY PRIVATE LANDLORDS 
  • Use your enabled JOINid (or UTORid) for viewing off-campus listings provided to the university's Off-Campus
    Rental website

  • Public online classifieds for apartments are listed at viewit.ca and PadMapper.
    In your searches on PadMapper, please filter out any short-term/Air BnB listings.

  • A UTMail+ address is required to access to a private Facebook group page with off-campus housing listings administered and moderated by UofT undergraduate students.
    The university has not inspected these private properties.
 
  

5. Enrol in courses in July

WHENWe are aiming to begin the course enrolment process on July 2 for ALL exchange students
HOW
Fall session classes begin on September 3, 2024
Winter session classes begin on January 13, 2025

Regardless of entering session, ALL exchange students must:
  1. On July 2, the online list of courses offered for the 2024-2025 academic year should become ready for you to review.
      
  2. During July 4-11, submit course requests into the law school's enrolment portal - do NOT use ACORN for course enrolment.
The Records Office at the Faculty of Law oversees course enrolment, and will send access information for its course enrolment portal, and general enrolment reminders by email. Please await that communication.
 
In the interim, please read the online Academic Handbook for course selection procedures and timelines.
 
 

6. Engage your new colleagues on Facebook

WHENAfter we have received notification of your acceptance of the Offer of Admission, get connected on our admissions group page for your JD cohort
HOW 
The JD Admissions Office will send an invitation by email. 
 
 

7. Obtain a Peer Mentor & Submit a Headshot Photo

WHENObtaining a Peer Mentor begins in June
HOW

To be fully supported throughout your visit to the law school, obtain an upper-year student mentor who will help to ease your transition.

In order to match you with a mentor with similar interests, you will be invited to provide basic information about yourself and your preferences on an online questionnaire.

The JD Admissions Office will email the link to the questionnaire on behalf of the Peer Mentorship Program.

Submit your Headshot Photo by July 15
HOW

Your professors and support staff like to familiarize themselves with incoming students. A well-lit headshot photo taken with a smart phone will suffice.
Please await our email with the detailed specifications on photo dimensions, file format and how to submit the photo.

 
 

8. UofT Vaccination Requirement

WHEN
Any requirement must be met in-time for the start of classes.
HOWPlease carefully review the university FAQ on a vaccination requirement. 

Since the information is subject to change at any time, please check periodically for any requirement to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in any in-person activities on university premises, which may include off-campus activities carried out under the auspices of the University, such as a student placement.

Also check whether students are required to provide the University proof of being fully vaccinated. In rare situations where students cannot be vaccinated, if warranted, they may seek a University of Toronto approved vaccination exemption.

By accepting your offer of admission, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the university guideline and agree to comply with the guideline and any amendments made to align with evolving public health guidance.

The possible consequences for non-compliance with the guideline may include, at the University’s sole discretion: prohibition from attending University premises and ineligibility to enroll in courses.

 
 

9. Attend Orientation

WHENHeld at the start of each session.
HOW
An event will be held to welcome new upper year students and familiarize you with the workings of the law school. You may expect an email closer to the event date with the details.
